Independence Day: Maya or Mahotsav?
The Deeper Liberation of Bharat Awaits
From the transfer of power to the practice of Dharma: reimagining freedom as truth, dignity and responsibility.
“The most dangerous hypocrisy is not the private failure of an individual. It is the institutional habit of preaching virtue to the world while practising vice at home.”
Every 15 August, Bharat celebrates the end of British rule with pride, gratitude and national joy. Yet this celebration also invites an important question: did 1947 bring complete freedom, or did it primarily transfer political administration while many colonial structures, categories and habits remained?
“The highest Dharmic nation will not be the one that speaks most piously. It will be the one that practises most faithfully.”
In this powerful reflection, Pt. Satish K Sharma examines Independence through the lens of civilisational continuity—considering the legacy of Partition, the survival of colonial frameworks in law, education and public discourse, and the need to distinguish ceremonial freedom from a deeper freedom of self-understanding. The article does not diminish the historic achievement of independence; rather, it calls us to recognise it as an opening—an opportunity that must still be fulfilled.
“That freedom is not a gift waiting to be granted by an empire, a party or a committee. It is a birthright and also a duty.”
